Marketing types can and should have influence on the scope of projects
that are undertaken. If Microsoft had correctly estimated how long it
would take to build VS.NET, they almost certainly would've released a
VS7 built on the VS6 codebase last year, and targeted VS.NET for 2002.
Three years is a long time in the software industry.
