Is Kylix dead?
I note that Borland is suddenly offering Kylix for $199 as a special
offer until August. That's an 80% reduction. I always thought $999 as
an introductory price sucked. Perhaps they're getting desperate to
sell any! (I'm still waiting for the $99 open source version.)

Perhaps. But nobody in the borland group is talking about
a price reduction yet. And there's a substantial interest
here in alternatives to VB.Net.

From following the borland groups, apparently the Professional wasn't selling as
well as the Enterprise. No kidding, at $999 it was much more than I was willing
to part with for a new toy. When I saw the $199 offer the other day (supposed to
be only for a couple of months) I ordered a copy. Maybe it was just all a trick
to get hesitant buyers to jump in... hmm. Now I just have to install and learn
Linux. LOL.

borland.public.kylix.non-technical might be even better

Re: Is Kylix dead?
From my perspective, seems folks are too busy using Kylix now after having
bought it, to talk about the price reduction. The tech groups traffic
picked up a lot right after the price kicked in <g>.

Thomas, any chance of a similar deal on Delphi 6/Borland C++ Builder. If the
answer is Yes, can I place my orders now?

Re: Is Kylix dead?
No kidding...If Borland reduces the prices for these packages, send me a
copy of each as well. I just received my "reduced price" copy of Kylix
yesterday and am looking forward to comparing it to VB.

Re: Is Kylix dead?
Well, if I'm not mistaken the upgrade price on Delphi 6 Professional is in
the vicinity of $399, with a $50 rebate for previous Borland customers, so
we're in the same ballpark, if not in the same set of bleachers with Delphi.
The "Snap" features (BizSnap, WebSnap, DataSnap) are relegated to the
Enterprise version, and you can do some really nice other stuff with
Professional - we've included the dbGo for ADO set of components in this
release of the Professional sku, so those of you with ADO data sources will
feel right at home. Check out our feature matrices at
www.borland.com/delphi for a more detailed breakdown of what's in which
version.
Hope you guys enjoy Kylix!

Re: Is Kylix dead?
Upgrade pricing doesn't help Thomas...for those of us looking at
alternatives to VB, the full price for Delphi pro or Enterprise is way high.
If it was lower making the switch would be *much* more attractive.
We're not all in mega-corps with huge budgets...

Re: Is Kylix dead?
There was a "competitive" upgrade for Delphi 5 but looks like they're not
doing that for D6? Right now with VB.NOT on the horizon and Kylix on the
store shelves, some kind of special pricing for VB owners would be a great
way to entice them over. $999 is a lot to pay when you're used to <$300
upgrades.
But with a little thought you don't have to pay $999 either. Technically,
there is a D6 upgrade from "any Borland Product" listed at $399, and you can
buy C++ Builder 5 Standard or JBuilder 5 Personal for $99.95...

John -
Since YOU brought it up (I'm afraid my house will get bombed for discussing
this in a dotnet forum)... I, too, am looking at my options - giving dotNet
a fair (technical) chance as well as playing with JBuilder. I am
documenting some of my findings of what it's like to be a VB programmer
using that language and IDE on a website with also notes about dotNet and
links to articles and newsgroups, etc. :
www.thedatafarm.com\dotnet
I just started it, but will add to it frequently.
I feel like I should have started this post with "psssst..."

I believe you can also download JBuilder Foundation for free....

Hmmm, given that this are the same products (at least Kylix and BC++B are
AFAICT - just for different platforms) I'm beginning to feel a little uneasy
about the pricing...

Kylix is not the same product as Delphi or C++Builder. It is a native Linux
app with a brand new class library. Going to another platform isn't as easy
as it sounds. Take it from me. I spent almost 1.5 years of my life on Kylix.
