SaveSettings VS Saving in registry through INI calls

I prefer to know where my settings are being saved and make my own API calls
    to save and delete settings.

If this is not standard, please let me know so that I can follow whatever
    the majority of programmers do.

Re: SaveSettings VS Saving in registry through INI calls

The new trend in MS is putting user-specific data in a users profile
    under...
    %username%\Application Data\Company\Product Name

Since these are files, they travel with a user from computer to computer as
part of their roaming profile. I would suggest an XML file format, as VB.Net
has a lot of support for it. However, regular files are fine too.

The registry should be reserved for machine-specific data. Like the location
    of executables.
