Web Matrix
The Web Matrix asp.net authoring tool at www.asp.net is going to make
asp.net a success. You heard it here first. ;-)

Zane: I thought ASP.NET already *was* a success? ;-) Is Web Matrix the same
as the "Saturn" I've been hearing about?

I like it. :-) Web matrix is a *free* asp.net authoring tool. One thing
that shouldn't be overlooked is that it comes with its own free web
server. ***IIS NOT REQUIRED***

Yeppers. I saw it a few months ago and it was tough for me to stick to
the NDA, it's a very nice tool.

eh? What's up with that then? Is is supposed to be some free alternative to
VS.NET???? Looks bloody like the VS.IDE (in the screenshots)...
and...I'm with Phil..ASP.NET already rocks!

Yep, free alternative to vs.net for making websites. My guess is that it
is targeted at and will be used for personal and small-biz websites.
Hey, I agree on asp.net too! That's why I have a server control in beta
now:

Thanks! :-)

Re: Web Matrix
If one has VS.Net, are there any reasons to look at/use Asp/Matrix? Does it
address some shortcommings in VS.Net or does it simply offer a subset for
free?

It looks to be easier for simple web sites. Other than that I haven't
used it enough to say.
However, there has been much moaning and wringing of hands hereabouts
because using asp.net requires IIS. Not everyone is running w2k server at
home. With the builtin web server in Web Matrix that problem no longer
exists.

Re: Web Matrix
Keericky! That picture of the two authors that popped up on my screen made
me blow beer through my nose. I'm not zapping them personally, it was just
kind of... unexpected.
Good timing. I was just about to embark on my next web authoring adventure
and this looks like a great tool for the job.

Re: Web Matrix
Hmmm, I caught my workstation talking to "ibuyspy.com" on port 80 after I
installed this thing. I don't like that.

Re: Web Matrix
What does Visual Studio .NET offer that isn't in ASP.NET Web Matrix?
Visual Studio .NET is the tool of choice for building professional ASP.NET
Web applications -- and includes many, many features not supported by ASP.NET
Web Matrix. A short list of these additional features include:
Intellisence statement completion support
Debugging support
Class designer and library component compilation support
Source control for multi-developer projects
Support for building Windows Client and NT Service applications
Enterprise Data, Class, XML Schema and Business Process Modelling designers
Many additional features too numerous to list...
