How to find Web Hosting services??
I am perty experienced with HTML and have been developing pages for an
intranet for several years. I have just been asked by the owners of a
new business to build them a commercial web page. Where do I begin to look
to find an adequate web hosting service? They do not currently have
internet access and so they have no dial-up account. They have asked me
to deal with all the little details for them. Any help?? Thanks.

Re: How to find Web Hosting services??
Bren,
You are going to have to determine what features you are looking for before
you can make a good decision. How much disk space do you need? How much bandwidth
will you consume? How many POP3 email addresses do you need? Do you need
database support? NT, 2000 or UNIX? And a million others ... I have listed
some sites for you to look at below ... I have seen all of the hosts included
as being recommended by someone or I have personal experience with them.
Before making a final decision, search http://www.google.com and http://groups.google.com
for any conversations and information you can dig up on your selected host.

http://www.innerhost.com/
http://www.burlee.com
http://www.readyhosting.com/ (a bargain)
http://www.affordablehost.com/ (very good support)

If you have not registered a domain name, I suggest http://www.directnic.com/.

Re: How to find Web Hosting services??
Hi Bren,
I have my website 'http://tampaguide.com' hosted at http://needa.com and
have been very happy with their service and support. They also have experienced
staff that can help answer some of the tough questions.

Re: How to find Web Hosting services??
Great question and answer!
I recommend services to small businesses, but haven't done it very many times,
so I'm still learning. I learned NOT to get domains from Network Solutions.
I currently use BuyDomain.com.
The services I look for depend on the client. Generally I want NT servers
(not UNIX) because I want the site to be able to grow into ecommerce/database
sites in the future and I work with ASP developers to do that on Microsoft
systems. However, if you are into CGI and all that jazz, then UNIX might
be what you want. Just remember all your links/file names are case-sensitive.
Some believe UNIX servers to be more reliable and somewhat faster.
Next I look for web-mail to go along with those POP3 email accounts. Generally
small clients need that extra option to get their email (or, should I say
that if I don't want to be their IT person, I like to offer that as an easy
solution, instead of configuring their email app).
Most hosts give you ample amount of disk space (storage) and bandwidth (download),
but you want to check that to make sure. You should see comparable/competitive
amounts of each.
I see that most plans I want for a small business (such as a doctor's office,
insurance agency, lawyers office, or other small business) can get a good
solid plan for $25-$50 per month with a $20-$50 set up fee.
My internal debate revolves around whether I eventually want to lease an
entire server of my own and direct-bill my clients for the hosting. The
jury is out, but I think I'm going to shy away from this because I contract
with my clients year-to-year and we both want the out to quit working with
each other should the relationship or something else go sour. So, I continue
to recommend them to their own web host. This way their site is fully "delivered"
to them and can sit up there on their server without my having full ownership
of it.
I have tried to divulge myself of IT duties, but recommending a site host,
domain host, and also search-engine optimization services is integral to
me getting the design contract. I keep a file of printouts and magazine
tearouts. I look for national companies who advertise nationally in magazines
or other media--thinking that it is another small indicator of their commitment
to longevity in their trade.
Write me if you want!

Re: How to find Web Hosting services??
There are many web host providers out there with many hosting plans to suit
your needs. Find a provider that can support you well and troubleshoot to
solve any technical problem that u may have on your site. Try going to www.hostpulse.com
to find a suitable provider to host your site.
Kind regards,
Job
