    manipulating <OPTION> tags

I want to be able to change the label of an option tag (i.e. the text that
actually appears for that option in the list within the browser), but am
currently unable to do this. Does anybody know how to do this in both NN6+
and IE5+? (I've already tried changing the label property and this didn't
    work in IE).
