Is there a way to access the serial port(s) from within VB without creating
a form? I know that there are timer API calls the replace the timer control
is there anything like that for the MSCOMM control?

Re: Serial API
Sure, there are several ways. You can use the Windows communications API,
use something like mComm (download from my homepage), or use a commercial
add-on. Sax Comm Objects (www.saxsoft.com) can be instatiated without using
a form, and Crystal Comm (www.crystalcom.com), which is DLL based are
examples. All of these options, and lots more, are covered in detail in my
book. See below.
