Mihalik: The current pre-release version of VB.NET requires Windows 2000.
Microsoft assures us that the release version (to be available some time in
2001) will run on Windows 9x and NT. I would assume that one or more beta
versions will be able to as well, but it's anybody's guess if or when these
will be available to the public.

Your guess is as good as mine. Realistically, the wide release beta will
probably be out some time in the fall. I would expect one of the major events,
but probably prior to Comdex. DevDays might be a good shot. The RTM code
will probably not be out until late 2001. Remember that VB.Net (the expected
name for VB 7) is a radical change to the way we develop.

I've heard that, but what I've seen has been ambiguous.... will Visual
Studio.NET run on all the platforms or just applications that you create
    with it?

I attended a MSDN Dev Cafe yesterday ("An Overview of Visual Studio 7") and
the MS rep stated a beta would be available by the end of the year.

Bob: Your guess is as good as mine, but if Microsoft wants rapid and
widespread adoption of the .NET platform, VS.NET had better run on NT4 as
    well as Win2K.
