If you're a beginner, I'd recommend "Beginning Visual C++ 5" by Ivor Horton.
When you first see how massive the book is, it will make you go off it,
but I really enjoyed reading it. You should really be patient with yourself.
I must say that I've never had a chance of looking at "Beginning Visual
C++ 6" by Ivor Horton, but I assume it's pretty similar.
If you are a professional, I found "MFC with Visual C++ 5" by Mike Blaszczak
to be good for only certain subjects.

There really is no 1 best book on VC++. I have 3 that I use pretty regularly...
MFC With Visual C++ 5 by Mike Blaszczak (Wrox)
Special Edition Using Visual C++ 6 by Kate Gregory (Que)
Teach Yourself Visual C++ 6 In 21 Days by Lyn Robinson (Sams)
Between these 3, I can usually find the answers I need.
