    Re: DevX Announcement--Changes to Newsgroups

It's certainly good to know that they located one that "sucks less", but
without the convenience of NNTP I'd suspect that the majority of the
remaining users will disappear. I know that there are no HTTP groups that I
read on a regular basis, perhaps if they pay people to answer the questions
then others will come seeking information.

This is a bad move. To go from a rather ubiquitous message format to
something that will require more work on the users part will essentially
exclude people like my self that appreciate one access point for help/news.

In this move DevX will now make msnews.microsoft.com the single source for
    microsoft related public help forums.

That would be nice (and might convince me to keep following the forums). But
I don't know if vBulletin can do that (or if Roy's managed to make vBulletin
    forums Feedable).

Dave: vBulletin does offer RSS support (see
    http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/external.php?forumids=55 for example), but it
doesn't look like the feed includes the full text of each item. It's just
MySQL on the backend, though, so it should be trivial to implement whatever
    is needed.

Gotta agree, there. I was a regular for years. Haven't been by in months, now.
Have no idea why I'd ever want to return, given the current direction. <shrug>

    Phil:

I'm surprised that you are supporting the dropping of the news group
    availability via OE.

Larry: I suppose I could boycott the Web-based groups and decline to serve
as a section leader, but I don't believe that would make any difference:
Jupitermedia has made its decision, and there's no changing its mind. My
only options are to leave these groups entirely, or give the new arrangement
a shot and see how it works. I choose the latter; I can always leave later
if the new forums are intolerable. :-)
