    verifying e-mail addresses

I'm currently working on a web page that will take some information from a
user and input it into a database.

One piece of that information is the user's e-mail address. I can easily
write a small routine that verifies that the e-mail address looks like an
e-mail address, but is there a way to check if the e-mail address that has
been given to the form is an acutual e-mail address?

    Thanks for any help
    Eric

probably not, because you probably cant interogate the recipients e-mail
system unless they have the information publically available in a directory
server, the best you can probably do is to verify the domain they provide
    with a whois query.

If this is part of a 'sign-up' process you can email them a link or
password. Make it a two step sign up process that doesn't finish until they
have that link or password. This will verify not only that the email is
valid, but that it's their email account.
