    Unhappy XSLT to implement a footnote in (X)HTML

    I need to implement a footnote system in (X)HTML. For example, suppose I introduce an element in my XML markup called footnote, such that whenever such an element
    <footnote symbol="*">Hello World</footnote> appears in the document then the contents of the footnote element should be displayed at the bottom of the document next to value of the symbol attribute.

    I am very new to XML and this is what I come up with so far, If anyone could help to get a bit further I will be grateful.
    Code:
    <?xml version='1.0'?>
    <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">

        <xsl:template match="/">
            <xsl:apply-templates/>
        </xsl:template>
        <xsl:template match="footnote[@symbol='@*']">
            <span>
                <xsl:value-of select="footnote"/>
            </span>
        </xsl:template>
        <xsl:template match="text()"/>
    </xsl:stylesheet>
