best intro books for expert programmers
I'm looking for a good intro book or three for someone who is very
experienced in other languages.
I don't want to spend money on stuff that is too basic.
I'm looking to spend about $100 on 1,2, or even three books.
Anyone have some suggestions?
Thanks,

Re: best intro books for expert programmers
Matt,
I see you've been bitten by the Java bug, too. I started with James
Cooper's "Visual Basic Programmer's Guide to Java". It was written a few
years ago, so some of the information is a bit out of date, but it's the
only Java book I could find that explained Java from a VB perspective. It
could have been done better, but at didn't waste your time explaining what
loop and if statements are for. I bought it from Amazon.com for $40 (it doesn't
include a CD-ROM). You can also try Sam's Teach Yourself Java in 21 Days.
This starts off at beginner level but goes into some heavy duty stuff.
There are two versions of this book, the regular version and the "Professional
Reference Edition". The PFE has an addition 7 chapters of material. I bought
the PFE for $50. I'm only on chapter 4, so I can't recommend it (yet) but
so far so good.

Re: best intro books for expert programmers
I recommend Core Java volumes 1 and 2 from Sun Microsystems Press. Other
books suck compared to these. Once you graduate from these, go for Graphic
Java volumes 1 and 2.

Re: best intro books for expert programmers
Ditto!
I'm been programming in VB and C for around five years and have been flirting
with Java for a while. I finally "jumped in" and picked up Core Java Volume
I. It is very good for the experienced program. It even compares how things
in Java relate to VB and C/C++.

Check out the reviews of Java books that DevX has posted:
http://www.java-zone.com/free/bookrevmore.asp?sort_by=1
You can also e-mail the reviewers directly and ask them what their best picks
are. Claude Duguay reviews many Java books for DevX, for example.
Good luck!
