    Understanding of XML

I've been reading between work and projects etc. online looking at what I
can for the understanding of XML.

Simply I don't get what you use it for, why do you need it? I know its info
is online but I need a real world example. To me it just looks like you make
up your own tags but why? What's the reason?

I guess I need the XML for dummies explanation in laymen's terms and if its
something I should take the time to learn?

One of the reasons I ask is my company is negotiating a deal with another
company and in the contract it mentioned something about being XML capable
now or in the future. Now from what I have seen of XML thus far this has
me off. Capable of WHAT? (making our own tags? .. hence my lack of understanding
    for the XML topic)

    Thanks for your help..

    Sincerely,
    George

    Re: Understanding of XML

    George,

There are standard tags being developed for XML, just not all down yet.
You can check out specs at http://www.w3.org/ Right now the entire front
page is devoted to XML stuff. The biggest reason for XML is the ability to
communicate between different OS's or DB's. As long as your system can spit
out xml you can send that to any other system and read it in.

    Re: Understanding of XML

Suppose I need to talk to people of different countries. Iíd have to learn
their languages. Rather than learning many different languages, letís all
agree that we all should learn English. For communication between different
platforms, applications and businesses, XML is designed. Only that XML is
not nearly as difficult as English. As you can see, the catch is that all
parties involved must agree that we all should learn XML. And it is becoming
more and more evident that more and more industries and companies are jumping
on to the XML band wagon.
