I think what the author failed to read in the Microsoft quote is the following:

MS is basically saying that in the real world, devs code for backwards compatibility.
If new versions of IE ignored this fact, IE would be scorned by developers
for breaking their Netscape 2.0 and IE 3.0 pages.

Standards are great and I wish the W3's docs were the end all be all truth,
but in reality they are recomendations. The standards-nazis like the author
fail to understand what it means to dev sites in the real world. Users like
my mom never upgraded their browser from 3 years ago and have to be considered.
