What is the preffered way of remote DB access?

Hello friends,

I am developing an application which accesses and modifies data from
a Remote database.

I am presently using ADO for this purpose, but the data access using
this method is very slow and at times the system hangs or the program
terminates (if I run through VB IDE). Can anyone please guide me to
the most efficent way of remote database access throught VB
application. Speed of access is my main consideration. Please mail me
