    The type of an SMS

    Hi,
Can someone please tell me how to identify the type of an incoming SMS.
Is there any special indicate the type such as
    1. a Picture message
    2. a Ringtone message
    3. a Text message

I tried http://www.dreamfabric.com/sms/ to get a clue but it doesn't give me enough data to get the type of the SMS

    Thanks in advance,
    Kaushalye

    Hi,
Adding to the above post I found that "06050415810000" (hex binary) is the header value for a ringtone.
I come to this conclusion by inspecting few ringtone messages and the following site
    http://www.csoft.co.uk/sms/api/soap_to_sms.htm
Is this valid for all ringtone messages?
If so what is the value for a picture message?
    Thanks,
    Kaushalye

First of all, you need to distinguish between plain SMS which is a 7-bit text message containing up to 160 characters, and MMS. The latter isn't supported universally. The SMS protocol defines various headers that define the actual size of each data structure. The header may include vendor- and network specific information (such as the locale, i.e., the language, in which the message is encoded) and universal information that all mobile devices recognize. For mor information you can look at this page:

Thanks Danny. Here I'm talking about picture messages and ringtones that can be sent as SMSs. These messages are supported by 2G phones(like nokia 1100). Encoded in 8-bit alphebet. 'Coz once I decode these incoming PDUs with the converter provided by http://home.student.utwente.nl/s.p.e...s_pdu.html#SMS it shows me the alphabet as 8-bit.

I went through the recommended page but details were not enough for my task.
    Thanks,
    Kaushalye

Please use PDUspy, it can help you decode ringtones and EMS.
